I thought I’d share the story of how I found the idea for my first novel, Cedar and Sage. During a phone conversation with a relative, we discussed on-line dating. Jokingly, I said if she ever decided to try it, that she should allow me to write her profile since I knew her very well.
After we hung up, I started thinking about what I would write for her profile and how people dated prior to dating applications. This curiosity about historical dating practices let me to the idea of matchmaking.
My cousin’s 60th birthday milestone was approaching, and I wanted to do something special for her. So I thought I would come up with a story. The original story was a shorter version. I tried to incorporate the number 60 in each element of the story. Thus, the story had 60 pages, the character was celebrating her 60th birthday, and there 60 roses, and 60 vows.
I wrote 60% – 70% of the book using my mobile phone. The words seem to flow easily. I then used Dabble, aa writing application to finish the story.
I printed the first copy and packaged it in brown paper, securing it with a drawstring. I attached a twig of cedar and sage on the top cover and mailed it to her.
I sent copies of the original story to some friends and relatives. I similarly packaged the printed versions in brown paper with string, cedar, and sage. Encouraged by the positive feedback from those who enjoyed the story, I decided to publish it. I expanded the story with more details for publishing.
This story was a tribute to a beloved family member. I am grateful for the journey of writing this story and look forward to the next one.
